He decided to be a koto player after losing of his eyesight at the age of eight. Studied under Nakajima Kengyō II and composed first piece "Mizunohentai" at the age of fourteen. After that he frequently released new pieces and helped create the movement for "New Japanese Music", having a tremendous influence in the development of Japanese Music. He played on the first day of broadcast of NHK radio in 1925. Affiliated with JVC since its first year of operation. He composed the eternal masterpiece "Haruno Umi" in 1929, became an instructor at the Tokyo School of Music (the present name is Tokyo University of Fine Arts) and after that a professor. He gained public attention for the ensemble of "Haru no Umi" with Rene Chemet and the record of it became a "Super Hit", not only in Japan but also overseas. This and his European concert tours made him a global presence. He became a member of Japan Art Academy in 1948, and established the Miyagi Association in 1951. On June 25, 1956, he lost his life at sixty-two by falling out of a train on the way to a concert tour in Kansai.
