Takamoto Senzan (Takamoto Shuntarō) was born in Miyagasaki, Sakurai-machi, Ochi-gun, Ehime Prefecture on April 28, 1893. He lost his father at an early age and he and his mother moved to Sapporo. In January of 1920, he began instruction from Tozan-ryū shakuhachi master Hatanaka Kozan. He complete his Shoden level curriculum by February. In April he completed the Chuden level, and Okuden in December. In January of the following year, he was licensed as an instructor. In March of 1923 he was transferred to the Bureau of Reconstruction and Revitalization in Yokohama, later moving to Osaka. In November 1927, he was recommended and passed his examination as an Jun-shihan (associate instructor).
