He was instrumental in establishing Japan's first school for the blind, Kyoto Prefectural School for the Blind (predecessor of the Kyoto Prefectural School for the Blind). His disciples include Ikuyama Kengyō and Sugiya Kengyō from Kumamoto (living in Kyoto, also studying with Yuki Hase). Composed the hauta "Higashiyama" (written by Rai Sanyo), which sang about the Kyoto Higashiyama mountain range.
