Born February 5, 1910 in Ehime Prefecture, Ōtani Jozan (Ōtani Toshio) studied Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under Kōno Hōzan, Kimura Kyūzan, Yamashiro Shozan, and Koike Reizan I. He became an instructor in 1931. He was the head of the Tozan-ryū Jyofu-kai. He was active in the shakuhachi world for more than 40 years.
